About Recovery Coaching

Recovery Coaching is a professional relationship characterized by collaboration and is focused on a strengths based approach.  It is also designed to assist peers and members to identify and remove barriers that may be impeding them from attaining their goals. This relationship is based on trust, experience and mutual respect.  The most significant difference between a Recovery Coach and other helping professionals is the Recovery Coach focuses on empowering the individual to do for themselves.  It is through motivation, guidance and accountability that Recovery Coaches promote this empowerment.

Recovery coaches work with and support individuals with active addictions or in recovery from alcohol, other drugs, codependency, or other addictive behaviors. Recovery Coaches assist individuals to make decisions about what to do with one's life and the part that addiction or recovery plays in it. Recovery Coaches can help individuals find resources for harm reduction, detox, treatment, family support and education, local or online support groups, or help an individual create a change plan to recover on their own.

Recovery coaches do not offer primary treatment for addiction, do not diagnose, and are not associated with any particular method or means of recovery. They recognize and embrace the concept of ‘many paths to recovery.’ They support any positive change in helping individuals to avoid relapse, build community supports for recovery, or work on life goals such as relationships, work, or education. Recovery coaching is action-oriented with an emphasis on assisting an individual to improve their present life and reach future goals.
